what is a pip? sorry

I have heard about it and seen pics but what is a pip and a zip?

PIP is the first hole the hatchling makes in the outer shell (they pip into the airsac first but that's only visible by candling)

ZIP is the line the chick then makes all the way around the shell in anticipation of popping out.

So, first pip, then zip, then hatch!
