I live in WA state. I wouldn't even think of not covering the run, unless you have a HUGE coop with like 10 sf per bird. If you don't you will probably be back on the boards asking how to remedy a smelly, stinky, muddy run. For that remedy i would recommend tilling, liming and lots and lots of sand!! I love sand and have it in my coop and in my run.
