What is artificial incubation?

Sorry, but I have no idea what the incubation of eggs artificially involves. What does an incubator look like? How much do they cost? Can you make your own? What all do you have to do when artificailly incubating eggs? Any answers, tips, or suggestions are highly appreciated.

The short version, is using a machine to hatch rather than a chicken. Different models cost different from 20-1000 dollars.
