I just raise layers, and often see on the breed list of chickens Dual Purpose. Does this mean it can be a broiler or a layer? Or does it mean it can be a layer or ornamental? Or does it mean something else?

its a jack of all trades not great at anything but acceptable at several...not to be confussed with no purpose which is what most roosters are

Good for the dual purpose of meat or eggs. Means a good or pretty good layer that will also cook up well. People often grow the roosters til around 12-18 weeks, which is around when they start crowing, because they are still tender enough at that age to fry or BBQ or most any method you want.

Means a good layer that will taste good too. A couple of my girls are considered dual purpose though I chose them for being good egg layers and not broody.

Mine are all layers with the exception of the rooster. Besides who can eat their pet? BTW thanks everyone for explaining dual purpose.

Yep, can't eat ours. I imagine we'll just keep them until they die of old age. I hope they live long enough to die of old age. It seems the local hawks have located us.
