What is Eggvanka looking for / trying to tell me???

Just want to tell u i am stealing your pullets name to give to one of mine!! Probably one of the 18-week-old isa browns. "Which one of u girls wants to be Eggvanka?!" I love it!!😁

Oh oh oh I'm so flattered, Thanks for letting me know!!! I have to share our other names with you bc we've had so much fun. I make my kids come up with chicken/bird names vs human names. It's made them have to think harder and learn about their companions.

We adopted 5 at 4 days old from feed store--of course they were supposed to be girls:

Ru Paul (EE >> turned out to be a boy >> hilarious coincidence of his name :)

Amelia Eggheart (brahma)

Slim Shady (golden sexlink) (that kid is into beatboxing and rapping :)

Swan (black sexlink)

Eggvanka

N'Sync (same kid who named Slim Shady)

Alberta Eggstein (now Albert :)

Chick Yeager...

Thank you (& thank your kids!) for giving me more clever names to use! I dont name most of my roos (because i usually dont keep them past 2-3 years, even tho i Never cull older hens), but am definitely gonna choose one of this years cockerels to be roo paul. 😁 I do currently have a rooster named eggbert the easter egger. (That one was easy!)
And will likely use the other names too, as soon as i get a feel for personalities. I only name my most "special" birds, the ones that are the friendliest & sweetest. But have about 80 new pullets this year, plus proportional cockerels to choose. Over 300 birds total. Many that had names from years past have passed away, but reusing their names doesnt feel right, so can never come up with enough good names even for the friendliest girls. Which means many go by the name "hey there sweet girl." Tu again for the list. 🙂

Oh oh oh Eggbert is fabulous!!! And I'm jealous of all your birds!!! Dear lordt--do you sell eggs then? Or chicks? (Not to pry, just curious :)

Xoxo

Yes i Definitely sell their eggs. Especially this year with the virus panic, couldnt even come close to meeting egg demand. I sold pol pullets and cockerels in years past, but after hearing a lot of girls i sold had been killed by predators, i quit selling chickens. As we all know, its Very difficult to keep chickens safe from predators, but i have gone to EXtreme lengths to do so, including three giant fort knox runs and coops, plus 2 awesome guardian dogs to protect them while they are out during the day. Have spent thousands of dollars on chicken housing i will never see a financial return on, but thats ok cause peace of mind is priceless. The main reason i have so many is because i have/had dozens of broodys, & have also gone to extreme measures to keep broodys and their chicks safe too. Just call me a total broody enabler! 😋 However, i did NOT allow very many broodys to hatch chicks last year, in order to get the numbers down somewhat as older hens passed away. Last year, Lots of girls spent time in broody jail. But with this years hatches, yeah, sigh, back over 300 again. Its actually not too bad to maintain 3 separate free-range flocks once the chicks can be integrated with the hens. Have often wondered how i'd feel having a,"normal" size flock, other than i would have more money and get more rest. 🤣

A good rooster will bring her to the coop as soon as she will let him know that the egg is on its way. Then he will get into the nest boxes to prepare them scratching the bedding and forming a nice hollow, exit the nest box and show her in, all the while cooing and reassuring her and often even waiting right in front of the nestbox until the egg is laid. Some even stick their heads in to coo and entertain her.

Congratulations on you green egg!

Regarding her behaviour I really think that it might have been her first egg. She will calm down when getting used to it.
Well my giant boneheaded cockerel isn’t doing this.

Well please know that I'm jealous :) and I praise you for all of your time, energy and money that you have put into raising chickens!!!

We could start a TV show "Chicken Companion Swap"-- like the Wife Swap show--you come care for my 6 chickens and my family--i go take care of yours lol :)

How old is he? Young cockerels often start rather rough and learn as they mature.
He was hatched in May so still young. The girls all hatched June 1st. He does do well herding and tidbit-ing and he is fairly gentle mating them. He’s mean to me, I take a walking stick out to the run to herd him away when he comes at me. Not sure how long he has left at our house with that attitude
