What is going on with these eggs?

Have you added any new chickens to the flock before this started? You say only the blue eggs are affected, not green eggs? Do you have brown egg layers? Did this start happening to all the blue egg layers at once? What do the insides of the eggs look like when you crack them open?

No new chickens. Just the four EE that we got all together last year. It started with one girl(Lilly) about a month ago, the second girl(Clucky) shortly after. I’ve only actually opened one egg to inspect which seemed to have a thicker consistency, but no worms or anything. The other two girls lay the green eggs. No issues with the green eggs. I will note that Clucky had been feather picking and has since been wearing blinders. Which is about the time this started. Maybe it’s stress?

You say some of the eggs float in water. Do you gather the eggs daily?

Gather eggs daily. Most all the blue calcium eggs float immediately.

Most worms, excrpt roundworms, are microscopic and rarely show up in the eggs. You could take a sample of droppings to any vet and ask for a fecal float test to find out if worms are present and what kind, if any.

Can you post photos of your hens and your coop/run setup?

Are they running out of water?

Do you give treats or other foods in addition to the All Flock?

Have you had respiratory illness within the flock?

Any lice/mites or worms?

Any disturbances/drama/stress within the flock?

How much space do they have and how many birds? (Sq ft coop and run).

I will take some photos after work. They are not running out of food or water. They get black soldier fly larva, fruits & veggies. They get out to play in the yard about twice a week and forage. No illnesses. No mites, lice or worms. There was a feather picking issue (see reply to other question in this thread). Their run is about 100-120sqft. (Sand) Coop is adequate for the four girls(5’ wide 3’ deep 4’ tall)(well ventilated), they sleep outside in the run on top of the coop through the spring summer and fall.Two nesting boxes.

My quick take is that you are dealing with aging layers. Thin shells and uneven distribution of calcium deposits are signs that some of your hens may be nearing the end of their productive lives.

These girls are all about 15 months old.

If they have been laying nonstop through winter until now they may start to molt soon and take a break from egg laying.

We got them about 2 or 3 days old. They slowed down through the winter, one girl(a blue egg layer) decided to molt in the very beginning of January.

Eggs like that coming out of such young hens is very concerning. It could be diet. I would put them on layer feed plus oyster shell and cut way down or eliminate all treats. Some greens such as spinach will prevent adequate absorption of calcium. Feeding excessive treats can displace the amount of balanced feed they eat and cause a nutrient deficiency.

Thank you. And yes, very concerning. Other than the eggs all four girls are behaving completely normal. I am not taking anything anyone is saying as a criticism, I am asking for help and I appreciate any and all input. We are first time chicken owners and truly want our girls happy healthy and thriving.
