What is grit??

Read thru and so everyone suggeting gritt for the chicks. Sent my husband to the place we purchased the chick feed and other supplies and they had no idea. Where eles can I get it or can i make it for them????
 
Grit is most commonly crushed granite or dirt and sand or pebbles eaten by the chickens and passed through to their gizzard and used to grind up the fiberous foods they eat.
 
Considering newchickmomof48 is from MA I figure she could mean good ole southern breakfast food, lol!!! Grits, they're not just for chickens, lol!! Sorry...got carried away.. yes, Miss Prissy is right but our southern fare is just as good to those of us without feathers!!

thanks for the help!! after I get off reading everything i need to know before my new babies arrive in just a long awaiting hour I will go on line and find a receipe for a true southern breakfeast and cook it for my family tis holiday weekend! I will let you know how i do lol!!!
