What is it? God only knows!! UPDATE on PG 10

Around here you can see 4-5 red tailed hawks at once. It's creepy. They stay hidden, but with the egg songs or if they get clucky over food, they come out of woods for about 30 minutes and I make sure the runs secure every day.

yeah, hawks are pretty much lone predators and will often times be sitting in a tree then attack... those sound like vultures.

You may be right, though. If a hawk gets a good meal at your place, it won't leave til it's cleaned house. They will most of the time leave a pile of feathers where it hit the bird. But sometimes won't. I reall hope you find out what it is.. that must be frustrating.

18 is a big number... Vultures may be... buzzards are vultures right... or similar? Um... try to get a pic if you think about it. of either a hen left behind (hopefully no more) or birds.

In this country, "buzzards" refer to a type of vulture. But in the UK (and possibly other countries), "buzzards" means a type of hawk. So it depends where you are when you say it!

Ok well that sucks....Just when I thought I had it all figured out!
Today I went down there and there were 2 "hawks" flying around and I ran down where I had let a few of my girls out (and their roo) out. I thought several would be dead or missing. My big Delaware roo didnt want to come out of the coop when I was letting the girls out earlier, but I made him so he could watch the girls. Anywho, I ran down there panicing and all I saw was the roo with a bloody comb and a little blood on his neck (alive and well). Shortly after all the girls came out of hiding. They were all fine and only one had a little blood on her comb. I had assumed that they had just been bombarded and the roo saved them! Now that you guys are telling me its vultures, I dont know what to think. I still think that he had to have saved them from somthing. He wasnt all bloody from nothing. He is perfectly fine now and so is everyone else. He seemed pretty shaken up when I got down there and the girls were all very happy to see me and have me let them in their coop....something happened. All I know now is I am in LOVE with my new roo, Jack

and he will never be chicken and dumplings (like I always told him he would be) and I ran straight to the store and got him and the girls some treats. They were mostly for Jack, though, he was the hero! Everyone got some though. I sat there hugging him and kissing him for like 10 minutes or more after and wouldnt let him down. It almost made me cry to think of how brave he must have been. Ok I gotta shut up now...Im starting to tear up just thinking about it.

That sounds like a dog, Kaylee. Have you seen any around there.

Most of the time dogs will eat their prize right there and then but sometimes (my dad's rotti) would like to bring the prize back home and enjoy his lamb chops

(my neighbors) on the front porch. It was terrible breaking him of it. Once they start, they can be insesent (Im not sure that's how you spell it)

I swear they were hawks when I was driving by... but then after reading this I looked up turkey vultures, and it could have been them.

But then yesterday a hawk swooped over my yard, and it looked just like the ones I saw flying over 45.

I dunno... I'm glad Jack saved the day though!

In flight "buzzerds" yes vultures fly in large groups and they also have a black color for the most part Hawlks in smaller numbers 2 maybe 3 i have seen 4 together im sure that they can be more but it is very rare and most times a strom or bad weater will follow. but anyway hawlks are gray almost white in flight it is very hard to tell some times tho. my guess would be buzzerds tho

The 2 today may not have been the many from before.

It's hawk migration time right now. They're moving from their winter range, to their breeding range. So you may see them migrating through in larger groups than they normally live in.

It could also have been turkey vultures. Which I agree, doesn't mean that you don't also have hawks.

I'm glad you have Jack. He really is a hero!
