I was thinking it looked like chicken food?

I knocked some weird looking - half moth, half beetle - things off the windowsill for the chickens one day. Oops, turned out these things bite back.

Is/was it a Luna Moth? I know it is NOT a black swallowtail butterflyk they have stripes, more yellow. I raise them here, along with Monarchs. I plant specific plansts for them, mainly milkweed and dill/fennel/parsley. Did you figure it out? There are some great web sites with caterpillars on them. HenZ

oh I always let thos live since the wasps are gonna eat them alive. Those horn worms can eat an entire pepper or tomato plant in one day/night!

I have never seen moths at my flowers just butterflies, maybe some are really moths who knows....

knee jerk reaction to kill most bugs for me, just cant help myself as it is I had to preform stem surgery on all of my pumpkin plants cause those grub things were eating the stems on the inside!!! I cant seem to keep them from my pumpkins, now I fear I wont have any harvest this year.

I don't think I'll know for sure what it truly was. I found it extremely interesting tho'. It reminded me of the pictures in children s books with Caterpillars and Inch Worm cartoons.
Since I have lived here for 6 years and that was the first time I ever saw one. I don't think it's to problematic of a bug.
and my chicken is still alive ...lol so it wasn't poisonous ... LMAO

Thank you all!

We had those wasps last year. How fascinating.
Happychick, next year try planting radishes around your pumpkins, cukes and squash. Let the radishes gow to seed. Its supposed to help prevent those nasty grubs.

Last year we had catapillars similiar to the photo. I can not recall the name but they turn into brown chrysalis that hung from the tree(over the winter) and this year they should have turned into very large brown moths.

Actually no, they aren't Luna Moths, but they are a form of hummingbird moth. Here is a link showing pictures and explaining what the various hornworms mature into.

Here is another link showing the life cycle of the tomato hornworm specifically and explaining about the parasitic wasps.

We had this guy visit the backyard a few weeks ago. It took me a minute to figure out it was a moth because from any distance it looked like a hummingbird but it didn't fly away! It was beautiful.

This isn't my picture but our moth was very similar
