What is NPIP?

I would not be concerned by the stock at hatcheries. They keep their stock healthy ... think about it. They could not stay in business if they sold sick chicks or chickens. No one would buy from then again. I know they offer you the option to get you chicks vaccinated. But I don't *think* all hatcheries offer that. In today's world you have to be more concerned by the chickens you get from auctions or Craigslist - the chickens that are from a backyard flock. Not all backyard flock owners are going to get their chickens NPIP tested/certified. In my opinion the best way to get birds is from hatcheries or from people who are NPIP certified.

Humm, Okay, thanks! I didn't get my birds vaccinated when i ordered them, i probally should call them and have they do that. I guess i wasn't thinking. So they do testing on the birds and look for the health of the birds basically?

in WI there is a program called WI certified that is the same thing as NPIP, it is meant for the backyard poultry farmer, In some places NPIP means nothing, the vac. at the hatchery is not what NIPI is testing for. there is no vac. for Pullorum

At most of the big hatcheries--your reciept is your "pullorum" free varification--the wording should be on there somewhere. If you are a breeder/hatcher and ship A LOT to different states, you can work with your local federal NPIP to do something similar. Otherwise you are filling out tons of forms.

My npip inspections are done every three months. They check for that bird flu. Also for the resp diseases. If I want I can have them check for salmonellas etc. that will cost a fee. Gloria Mintz

I'm sure the cost varies, from state to state, but how about some figures...Are they per bird, or per visit? In a large flock, I can't see any conceivable way to isolate every bird, for an examination.

Also, being performed, by the govt. they could, arbitrarily, raise the fees, beyond the profitablity margin.

In NC. the resp checking is free. 5.oo dollars for the first 12 birds if you want further testing done. There is a different amt for large flocks. Its not as much per bird. Oh mine was started due to the scare of avian flu. They are following small flocks to see where it hits first if at all. Gloria Jean

WI, its up to the tester for test pricing, me I charge $1.00 a bird with a $20 min, unless you are 4h or FFA than there is no min. charge, the NPIP is $80 a yearly fee, that is for the smallest amount of breeders the more chickens you have thehigher the price, plus you pay for the inspection
