What is reasonable time to let the rooster outside?

So sorry to hear about your batty neighbor. I moved into an association in the Manistee National forest...... I own 10 acres. The association was formed so people could have animals. I moved in and brought horses....... My neighbors had fits. We were zoned agricultural. One of my neighbors is on the zoning commission. He got to work changing our ag stat to residential. Unfortunately for him since I already live here, my animals are grandfathered. Any of my other neighbors will have to get permits to get the animals I have. Considering your other neighbors have livestock, I really wouldn't worry about a change in zoning... I've only had one complaint about my roosters and that was from an out sider just visiting...... If I were you, I'd put up a makeshift Hen house on the other side of the garage away from the house.......30' from your residence. And not worry about your idiot neighbor...... It'll be there just incase. You can put in a little doggy ( chicken) door to the Garage.

Oh my gosh -- it's such a coincidence that you just posted that about your neighbor being on the zoning commission, because I just found out yesterday, that MY cranky neighbor is ALSO on the zoning commission!!!

My heart sank when I heard this terrible news! Apparently, the neighbor on the other side of Crankypants has horses, and he wanted to put up a fence between his property and hers so he could let his horses roam the pasture. Crankypants had a fit, and the next thing he new, a county inspector drove up and made him stop building the fence until he got a permit. So he applied for a permit and was denied. Over and over and over.

The reason she doesn't want him to build a fence, I hear, is that she thinks it would lower her property value. This makes no sense, so I think the real reason she objects is that controlling other people makes her feel powerful and good about herself. Maybe it's just a power trip thing?

So apparently, my rooster is not the only object of her wrath. So are horses, dogs, sheep, etc. And we live in the country. What the hell? Why do people move to the country if they don't like animals?

So after hearing your story, now I'm SUPER worried that she may actually hold a meeting to change our zoning like yours did. If I hear that is in the works, I am going to stock up on 10 more roosters before it passes so they can all get grandfathered in. I am not kidding. Maybe I will get some peacocks and pea hens too. Heh heh.

On a side note, I let the rooster in question out of the smaller chicken pen the other day and into the larger yard with the bulk of the flock, and he has become *so quiet.* I think before he was frustrated living in the smaller pen/corral, and now he's just happy.

Good Morning! If I were you, I'd start attending some township meetings. Start filing complaints with the board about harassment! I'd let them know how she's trying to run her neighbors. Your neighbors too. That old bat can't get away with some of the nasty crap she's pulling. The neighbor I'm talking about now leaves every body alone. I have lived here 15 years now and am now secretary of our hoa;-) If your town ship is like mine they should have a web page with meeting schedules. Hit her where it hurts!

Oh and btw, I have 5 roosters........................ I love them all but they sure are vocal............... Each trying to out crow the next. LOL... It would drive bat lady nuts;-)

at this time I have one rooster--im 1200 feet off the road on 13 acres--country,country, country, my neighbors who walk every morning,(several of them) know our house as the one with the crowing rooster. they all don't mind it. my husband who was totally against having a rooster last year because of the noise is now so use to it, he sleeps right thru the crowing at 530 in the morning!!hehehehehe--and the best part is the rooster is one of his favorites! I always give out eggs to the neighbors---that might help keep piece for some people with nasty neighbors.

Oh Hey, I was just thinking! Your neighbor that has the horses....... He should call the Department of Planning and Zoning and find out if he needs a permit to put up a temporary electric fence. Some counties actually allow them with out permits in agricultural zones..... I truly find it irritating when some one who doesn't make my mortgage payments or pay my taxes tells me what I can or can't do on my property........

Where on Earth do you live?! In any other place I have lived the concept of "conflict of interest" would arise and Crankypants would not be permitted to vote on any issue that directly affected her/her property. Further, the local papers would have a field day, to say the least, with one official ABUSING her position so blatantly. In fact, around here she would be compelled to step down.

Having said all that, if she has mastered the "good old boy" system in your town there's really only one way to fight back: kill them with kindness. You need to become "that sweet lady with the fresh eggs" and "that nice lady who volunteered" and so on. Be active. Be helpful. Be selective, though, because you can wear yourself out and not get anything accomplished. Find out who the other members of the Zoning Board are, and what other activities they participate in within the town. Get to know them on their turf. Overall, it will make it harder for them to vote against you.

Oh, I put the rooster in a box for the night only, inside the house, to muffle his crowing. It's a big box. There is a big reinforced barn full of chickens he WAS sleeping in, but apparently my neighbor's supersonic bat hearing picked up the crowing at 5 a.m.-ish.
Hey, don't you know that Country folks like the Rooster's crowing. It's a free alarm clock supplied by God almighty. You get up with the Rooster and grab a cup of hot coffee and set on your front porch and watch the sun come up, It's good for the soul.

Haha, I totally would like to lock my neighbor in a box. Since this thread started, I have realized how wrong it is to put the poor guy in a box in the bathroom, so he hasn't been in that box for weeks. He is really quiet; my 3 geese and 70 hens make MUCH more noise then he ever has made, so it's really silly to try to suppress him. Poor guy.
