I read before about some of you covering a run with something cloth and I can not remember whaat is was called and is it reasonable priced and can I get it at home depot or lowes or where ?? Thanks

Were you thinking of shade cloth, as in what Lowes, greenhouses use? Some pet stores have small sections of it to put over dog runs, but you can buy a whole roll off ebay for less money.

Also, if you cover your run to protect against hawks, TopRite Netting is the thing to use.

Could you be talking about hardware cloth?

Here's a pic of 1/4" hardware cloth that we like to use on our runs.

We get ours from either Lowes or Tractor Supply:

It may be kind of pricey but it's very predator proof so it works out/balances out, in the long run for us.

Hope this helps!

Hardware cloth would probably be WAY too expensive!!! YIKES!!! And anywhere that gets heavy snow,it would easily gather too much snow so it would get very heavy. Assuming the girls are locked up safe and sound at night, you dont' need it for other predator security either. Yes, it keeps them safe from Raccoons and Opossums and such things, but that's usually an issue at night when they raid.

There's several kinds of netting out there that would keep your girls in and hawks out.

Hardware cloth is more for predator security underground and at lower levels where they can tunnel under or reach through.

Perhaps if you gave us an idea of what you want the cloth to do, someone might hit on a good solution.

Shade?
Keep chickens in?
Keep predators like raccoons out?
Keep wild small birds out?
Keep predator birds like hawks or eagles out?

the feed store in our town and probably the co op has a net very lightweight that is designed to keep birds off fruit trees. it works fine to keep chickens in and hawks out. its very very cheap. aj

The pen is being made out of recycled chain link fence . However it is only 4 foot high. So we are thinking of putting 8 foot timbers down the middle of the pen and sloping a top from there down both sides to keep the hawks and such out. They will be enclosed in an 8 foot by 10 foot recycycled metal building with just a " chicken" door cut at the bottom for them to go into to lay their eggs in a roost at night. So any suggestions on a reasonable cover for them?? The pen is 25x25x25x25 . So It is a pretty good size pen to cover . Thanks for all your input.
