Just hatched 70 out of 100 coturnix a couple of days ago. Two have died of unknown causes and one appears to have wry neck. Just watching that one for a while. I know casualties are to be expected, but I wonder if any of you long-time quail raisers have arrived at a statistic for mortality based on your experience. Out of 70, assuming proper care, how many can I expect to make it to 8 weeks?

Thanks,

Normally, once they are all in the brooder, I always get one-two to die. That's out of 40, my last hatch. (That's not counting incubator mishaps, but you know...)

UGCM...

Sorry I have never bean counted and come up with post hatch mortality average, but i can tell you any natural losses will likely be concentrated around the first 5 days of life... of course your lil wry neck and any others that appear weak should be suspect until full size and laying... Not to be confused with mishaps like chicks getting wet and cold, etc...

Our first group of 250 we lost 4 and the next group of 250 we lost nine, so I'm assuming were either darn lucky or I'm taking good care of them since I got some extra time on my hands.

I also called my quail whisperer friend and she did the quail dance. The quail could have cared less but I got a kick out of it so I think it helped.
