My family and I are looking to get a rooster. what would the best bread be to get.

I'd get a standard breed (full sized as opposed to a banty breed) and I'd have to know this:

Children around?

If yes then I'd look for one of the more docile ones, otherwise it won't matter.

I've had a silkie (banty size) be a good protector and I've had roosters that should be good protectors (EE rooster) who were well- chicken.

RIR usually do a good job, but it will depend on the individual rooster.

People here are always placing out extra roosters.

Also conciser that people tend to put more value on purebred chickens then mixed chickens, you roo should match your hens if you want to sell chicks.

Good luck.

yes we have kids and i like the mixed chickens that we have. so i see your point. thank you

No problem, in fact I have a couple (extra) roosters that (except for spring time when I don't allow contact) they are safe around my two year old- but I'm in North FL.
