What is the best breed cockerel?

I am looking for a cockerel to get in early Spring so my hens can go broody and have some chicks. I am looking for a big, friendly cockerel that has good genes for laying as I have quite a lot of Hybrid Warrens and I looking for one that is tame.

I would be very grateful if anyone could let me know of a good breed that I can get in the UK.

If you breed with anything other then the breed hens you have you will have mutt chickens but for gentleness and egg productivity I would recommend a Brahma or a buff orpington

The problem with BO is that they are not good layers

One of the biggest, but there are possibly 2 other breeds larger would be a Brahma Rooster. Brahma's by nature are calm and friendly.

Terribly sorry to hear that a dear friend of yours passed away. We just moved here a year ago (well in two weeks). We moved from Raleigh to Wendell. I can only say that I truly love it out here. Love the small town feel, love that out in the country is truly out in the country. Not a huge fan of the 25 min commute to work, but it's not terrible. I highly recommend Wendell NC to anyone looking to move out to the country. Beautiful land and the neighbors and town have been wonderful.

If you get a male he will fertilize the eggs but won't make a female go broody. Springtime is normal for most animals to feel the urge to mate so you may get a broody but not because you have a male.

Never been to Wendell; spent a bit of time in Duplin Co., & over on the west side not far from the TN line, though, around Statesville.
