What Is The Best Breed YOU Recommend?

Your Spitz don't brood? Mine do a nest each year together
I had on go broody in the garage but when I moved her out she broke after a few days. The other hasn't yet. My chickens aren't a year old yet. Might go broody again.

Oh and she was mean, tried to rip my fingers off. The Phoenix are very pleasant and I'm thinking trust me with their lives and the babies lives. Probably more than they should.

My phwonixes are practically feral apart from the crappy male. But considering their living arrangement currently, that's fir the best. And I don't think my Spitz nested their first season either. Hopefully you have more luck. Mine don't get scary when brooding, just super fussy and poofy

Others have had some great recommendations here. But I wanted to add Jersey Giant. I'm not sure about their mothering abilities yet because mine hasn't gone broody and I don't hatch eggs anyway, but mine is a solid layer and she is large (not even fully grown yet and is my largest chicken). Oh, and she's a lap chicken! Jumps up to be pet all the time and will fly up to my arm on command. Good in cold and hot weather.

I only have one so maybe not every JG would be like this. But she shows that they can be. Here's Ursula.

I know they aren't technically a breed and can vary widely in temperament, but I love my Easter Eggers. Mine are from Hoover Hatchery, McMurry Hatchery, Spitz Bros and some I have bred myself. They lay most days of the week. My best broody is a McMurry Ameracuana (the EE variety, not the purebred). I'm not sure of your definition of a good sized hen, but mine are all in the 4.5 -5.5 pound range.

Second the recommendation on Sussex!

We went for only friendly egg-laying breeds, and we also love our Orpington, along with our Plymouth Rock who is the most cuddly chicken ever. Australorps and Cochins are also very friendly, but Cochins can be quite broody.
I really need your help, with your Orpington expertise. I'm trying to get a special started pullet for my boyfriend. Www.Chickenscratchpoultry.com sells a started Chocolate Pullet and I'm hoping your expertise can help me make sure this is a lovely friendly calm bird for him. Thoughts?

Oh the best hens I have in all these departments are Welsummers, Bielefelders, and my personal goofy love favorites, Buff Orpingtons. Apparently im drawn to the brown ones lol!
Need your expertise on Orpingtons.
www.Chickenscratchpoultry.com is selling started Chocolate Orpingtons- 7 week. I'm getting this bird for my British boyfriend. He's a calm, friendly guy. Will this bird be a good pick for him? He loves soft boiled eggs with toast soldiers on Sunday- straight from England... Please help

Orpingtons are known to be friendly, calm, and personable. They lay a large egg pretty regularly. Will he be getting more than one?
