It depends. do you want your chicks to lay eggs or do you just want a sweet chicken?

I agree with MallyCat. If you want a sweet, loving bird, Cochins are a good bird. I have Bantam Cochins and I have the sweetest little hen ever. She likes to be wherever the family is in the yard, and she goes for ride in the wagon, on the motor scooter, and she even goes roller skating with my older daughter, and she LOVES it. I guess even chickens can have a need for speed, lol! If you want a good egg layer, I personally like my Amber Sexlinks. They're the product of a RIR rooster over a White Leghorn hen. I have 2 girls and they are WONDERFUL in temperment. They let my kids carry them around and kiss on them, and they never fuss or peck. They come up readily for treats and are not skittish. I just love them both. Silkies are nice too, but mine are standoffish. Gentle, but standoffish. I love to talk to my White Silkie rooster Hector though. He knows his name and doesn't seem bothered when we scoop him up and hug him. But he doesn't come looking for love like my Cochin hen does. My other Cochin hens are nice too, but my little Petunia is just the best.

I keep hearing Cochins are lovely birds.

Silkies are nice but they are also shy sometimes.

Anyone have experience with Seramas? (sp?)

Ahhh the QUESTION. Buff Orpingtons. They are big, lay big eggs, winter hearty, friendly, pretty. I have alot of BO's and none are fickle, unless they are broody, then LOOK OUT!!! LOL! But they are the nicest breed I have and I have alot!

Buff Orps or Barred Rocks are my favorites... Every single cochin I've ever had have been little devils from hell, and silkies are very shy it seems. Lol someone must've forgotten to tell mine they were supposed to be sweet, gentle broodies, they most certainly were not! Of course, I don't think that's the standard, but watch out.

I heard great things about Buff Orpingtons, and so far (at 11 days old or so) my Buff is the friendliest of my 6 chicks. She is so mellow compared to the others! I describe them to my non-chicken friends as the Golden Retriever of the chicken world. LOVE MY BERNADETTE!

I have had two bantam cochins, and both were nightmares! We had to kill my bantam cochin rooster because he severely damaged my little sister's eye by jumping up and pecking her. Now we have a cochin hen that nearly killed her babies when she was broody, so we had to rescue them. To top it off, every time I go in the coop she follows me around and jumps up against my legs scratching and pecking me. So I would NOT recomend cochins for sure. My favorite chicken is a 6 year old easter egger hen. Good luck!

I have white rock, australorpe and EEs.

My white rock is bossy and pecks at the others. My Aussie is shy. My EEs are lap chickens (and the green and blue eggs are pretty cool too!)
