feed i use---------Dumor Chicken food------back of bag will tell you when to feed starter, grower, and layer crumbles.
this is the only food i use, although i'm sure they're all probably the same content of nutrients for the birds. local store, tractor Supply sells evertything.

That is something you will have to try out and decide for yourself. With many feeds, depending on where you are, the formulations can often change.

I guess this is as good a spot as any to ask this question.... I was using Dumor layer from tractor supply, then my wife (and I) decided maybe we should buy feed with omega 3 in it. This was made by purina. We also recently started giving the girls oyster shell and a little grit mixed in, however we never had any soft shells. On the Dumor the 9 we have were laying 7 or 8 eggs a day all through the winter, no problems with soft/cracked eggs. Now to my problem, since changing to the omega feed (which is about 2 bucks more), the girls are way down on eggs (4 yesterday and only one this morning). We noticed the drop last week and as we needed feed anyhow decided to go back to dumor feed and mixed what was left of the omega feed with it. I should mention I mix a little scratch with the feed also. To begin with I used only dumor and cracked corn everything was fine in spite of the cold winter. Now it's getting warmer and the feed and they are off. I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it....... Has anyone had a problem like this. BTW I have had a number of cracked eggs and yesterday a weirdly deformed egg. I thought they were grumpy cause they couldn't go out cold, hawks etc. Sorry to be long winded but I am concerned.

I fed the Omega 3 and had no problems. I didn't stay with it though because of the expense. As far as "The best feed" its really a personal preference. There is a feed mill here in town that I often buy from and I would put it up against some of the national brands.

Well egg count is up to 7 tonight (2 in am 5 in pm). maybe they just wanted to give me a hard time LOL. They ran around in a fenced off area so I could work in the garage and keep an eye on them a couple of days. hope fully all is on the mend. That will teach me to mess with a good thing.
