I use a regular goose-neck desk lamp, and a 60 watt bulb. When the chicks aren't using it I put it back on the desk.

60 watt bulb in a small Wal-Mart clamp on lamp for less than $10. Painted the bulb red. Works great for a few chicks in a small area (18"x18" box)

I use a 75 watt RED HEAT BULB with a reptile light thing that you can buy at PetsMart.

I go to wallys and get a clear heat lamp then paint it red. Way cheaper than buying a red one already. Works great.

I really find this info usefule!

I have a small brooder.....so the 100w sounds better to me.

I will make sure to keep a close eye on the temp to make sure!

I still have a few days to decide which to try!

The 100w turned out to be too hot for my small brooder too! I didn't really want to raise it up because that will spread the radiance. The brooder is so small I want to be sure the chicks will have somewhere to go outside the ring of heat. I just checked the temp in there after having no heat for awhile and it's 85. Doesn't seem like I need too much auxiliary heat at all! Next try - 50W bulb!

I got a dimmer from Lowes that you plug a lamp into. I lowered my temp in the brooder with dimming the heat lamp that way.
