I heard RIRs but my girls are nearing 7 months of age and haven't laid a single egg yet! So I got some Production Reds but they are just a couple months old now. So I guess this wasn't much help. But, from what I've heard, Sex Links and Production Reds are supposed to be good.

Yeah, he's got the production/RI reds right now, and he's tired of them. I was thinking of buff orps or barred rocks, but I don't know which would be better. I would like to get some dark egg layers (welsummers, marans), but everyone is out of them right now.
If you're ordering from a hatchery try Meyers. You have to call them to find out what they have. Their website isn't up to date which is a pain - but on the other hand they are not sold out like some of the other hatcheries.
I'd also say barred rocks. Or partridge rocks, if the barring is not good.
Austrolorps,
their egg size and color is a touch above our barred rock flock. May be our climate here but we will be increasing our Ausie flock size next go round.
If you think he'd enjoy an assortment, right now My Pet Chicken has a deal where you get 25 sexed chicks for $41 including shipping. I think that all of the breeds they have advertised are brown egg layers. Except for the EE's of course. They also have 25 Barred Rocks for the same price.

If you really want some marans (eggs) I have a friend at work who sells them. He was going to bring me a half dozen next week, but if you want them, I can tell him you need them more. I think he charges $35 for 6 eggs. Not cheap, but nice lines.

I'd really rather have chicks, I can't hatch shipped chicken eggs to save my life!
