What is the best shape for a roost?

I'm asking because I'm trying to design a new coop (out of an old horse trailer) and would like it if the roosts could be moved around or taken out of the way for cleaning.

Options for moveable roosts:

- hinge one side at the wall and have a rope and pulley system to lift the other end up and out of the way
- have roost bars that slot into the support beams or brackets

I used fencing brackets, they can be unscrewed by hand:

All very interesting. I've been doing some searching on the internet looking at the anatomy of chicken feet. Some breeds have 5 toes, most have 4. Didn't know that. I spent time looking at chicken foot anatomy pictures, looking for the keel bone, as Howard E and the research paper mentions. Never found it. Finally just googled "chicken keel bone". Oh, the breastbone - duh! Thanks everyone for all your great discussion!
