What is the best way to "dispatch" of raccoons and other predators?

the poison may be painful, but for about 5 seconds tops. Racoons are found within 10 feet of the poison dish. I racoon can cover a lot of ground quick, so... 5 seconds or less.

I personally wouldn't drown, but sometimes you have to protect your property.

The dispatch of trapped animals can be a very inflaming subject. There are a lot of people that don't believe in killing anything, people that are OK with it, but don't want to do it themselves, etc... The 2 most widely used methods among trappers is either shooting them (which is not an option for you) or a hard blow to the head with a blunt object and you can't do that to an animal inside a cage type trap. Skunks can be dispatched with an injection of acetone into the chest cavity by using a "skunk pole". In you situation drowning could well be your only option.

I had no idea it was that quick. I'd always pictured something akin to an antifreeze death. That makes me feel much better. Thanks

no problem.. But I've accidentally gotten my barn cats this way. I make sure they are locked in when I do this..... but I only resort to that method with "dumps"/Cage smart Raccoons.

Poison can be slow and painful. Drowning can be horrific. A bullet is fast. A 22 rifle is quiet. The neighbors won't hear it. AC is a nice sentiment, but so many places don't have it or they are ineffective. You could check to see if there is a wildlife rescue organization in your area, but don't count on help with a nuisance predator.

Depending on which poisons you use, you are likely to either cause a prolonged painful death or to poison other animals. I suspect that drowning could get you arrested for animal abuse, at least in some areas. Shooting is messy, but humane if done properly. For small animals (rats, chicks, etc) you might use ether, but I wouldn't try it on something that large.

If you must kill it and can't shoot it, call your Division of Wildlife Resources and see if they can kill it for you. Some animal controls might as well. It is relatively easy to give injections through live traps, so they might either be able to shoot it or give it a lethal injection.

A pellet gun will work fine. Im not a big fan of poisoning or drowning. I know in new york you only have to be 16 to buy an air rifle. no papers needed.

Id say a real gun or a pellet gun

You can try animal control if your comfortable/able to do it yourself. I understand about the no guns on property rules, be prepaired that A/C may just come out, shoot it in the trap, and tell you to dispose of it (things you may not want the kids to see/hear). If AC won't come out, call an exterminator.
