What is the best way to get rid of a hawk...

I have tons of crows and haven't seen a hawk since I got chickens. However, last year I put an egg on a chair to go get some others and when I got back it was gone, and I thought I might have just forgot that I put it in the house. The next day, I did the same thing, and watched a crow steal my egg. I had to laugh

I have a few acorn trees which gives me tons of squirrels, but I have no crows, I know there are plenty around. I do have at least 4 cooper hawks and they have ruined my dreams of free ranging. Maybe I will try planting pecan trees, sure could not hurt...

You may indeed have either a golden eagle or a bald eagle. Golden eagles ARE found in Massachussetts in the winter, and immature bald eagles don't have the white heads -- they are all brown. In addition, immature bald eagles aren't very good at hunting yet, so they might be more likely to go after "easy" prey like chickens.

I just looked up one of the official Massachusetts checklists, and even white-tailed eagle (a Eurasian species) has been sighted in Massachussetts. Coooel!

Gee, I won't argue with you on this one my friend, be carefull though, there are lunatic hawk mercenaries on this board, they may report you to the feds.

Those lunies would never addmit that overpopulated hawks are destroying thousands of wild birds, many of them protected and rare species, "they just killing mice and rats" and sometimes your domestic birds (on rare occasion only) they claim.

Threatning or harming a hawk is almost like threatning POTUS.

Federal crime.

You have no right to defend your property and your animals.

Raptor's life is more precious that human life now.

You may get 5 years in prison + something like $200 000 in fines.

Many individuals convicted of manslaughter got lighter sentences than that.

Somebody's got to put end to this madness.

Whatever happened to treating people with respect on this board??

Reminding people of Federal crimes does not make anyone a "lunie", for heaven's sake. Whether you like the law or not, it is there. Of course -- if you don't like it, then you have every right to get out there and try to get it changed.

I will just put my two cents in, and this will be the last time I say anything about birds of prey. The biggest cause of song birds demise has been humans. Feral and house cats have decimated the population of song birds for years...... I have decided that free ranging my chickens will not be possible where I live. I will not harm any wild animals for my chickens. It is my responsiblity to keep my chickens safe. I fear that I will cause more problems for them than any wild thing!

We have vultures that chase the hawks away they will sit on our roof almost all day protecting our chickens. They have never tried to kill or attack or hang out with the chickens and they have been here for about a month or two. Its so weird:confused: but ill take it:thumbsup
