What is the EGG CARTON Method??

No, they won't melt. Some people like to use the paper-pulp kind because they figure they would "breathe" better..... but, I've read posts where both types have been used successfully.

I had asked about the egg cartons too and it sounds like a great idea! I did get told that if I used the styrofoam I should cut vent holes in the bottom, but I didnt' have any styrofoam ones anyway

. Good luck, I am definitely doing it with my current hatch when the time comes

It's the only way that I know..I always use the paper-pulp and I have a piece of pipe that I use to cut holes in the bottom. .. I am a DIYer so my bator is an old upright freeze with a home made turner..my eggs go in the carton on day one and stay there..day 18 they go into another old freezer as my hatcher. I have an 80% hatch rate..: Good Luck everyone

Wow, 80%!! That is great...I am still trying to get 50% & am up to 38% so far. I am going to wait to get some better measuring devices before I attempt to hatch anymore though. I will use this carton method at the same time, too. It sounds great.

I used the styrofoam ones and did not know about the vent holes! the humidity made alot of condensation on the styrofoam, next time I will use the paper egg cartons...

Frogdoggie go to Walmart and buy a Accurite thermometer. Ask for them in the lightbulb/lamp/electric area of wal-mart. Mine worked great

I use the egg carton method this past time and LOVED it! It just seemed more natural since I had them in the egg turner the whole time and I didn't think it would be good to just lay them on their sides all of a sudden. I used the paper cartons and most of the shells stayed in the cartons so it was easier to clean up. Just keep the pointy side down and big side up!

Here's a pic of my hatch with the egg cartons.

great pic and great job, gumpsgirl. I think it is easier for the chicks to hatch as it would be like someone gently holding the egg in an upright position for them and not rolling everywhere while they are trying to zip around the egg. I have some keets due to hatch tomorrow..day 28 and one more week on my blue orps.
