What is the Friendliest goose Breed??

i have 2 canadians , both types of toulouse,a ebden,2 chinese and a sabastopol .

My canadians(stephy & Bubba) get a little nervouse around me and will jump up and fly a few feet away from me but will eat out of my hand .

My toulouse(toulousie & Big Guy ) are ver docile and i can walk right next to them and they dont budge . They to will eat from my hand . I have never seen one of my toulouse start a fight !

My ebden(Goosey) Likes to start fights with other geese and pick on my other birds(chickens,ducks,pheasants and fuaght with my tom turkey i had) . He will come right up to me and eat from my hand but he has for no reason bit the back of my legs !

My Chinese are very loud . I know they are Known as the "watchdogs " of the geese world and really live up to that name because if me or any one or anything goes near their pen i hear the honking . they are very skiddish .

my sebastopal (layla ) is very laid back and friendly . If i yell 'LAYLA" she will start making all kinds of goose noises and seems to get happy . She will eat out of my hand but she gets picked on by my chinese female .

Do geese bites hurt??

Oh, yeah.

Basically, goose fights are a lot like judo. They clamp onto one another and just wrestle around untile on gives up. It's actually rather commical. It's like slow-motion warfare.

So yeah, goose bites do hurt. But, they are seldom actually harmful.

as stubborn as I am and since I am feeding them and cleaning their living quarters, I'm planning on picking up those young ones if they hatch, and trying to get them to think of me as BIG MOMMA

I was picking up the goose and gander until that began sitting on those eggs...he doesn't like it at all but he'll do anything to stay near his goosey. She liked it but wants him in sight. The last time I picked her up right before they laid eggs (they broke the first four and probably my fault since I picked the eggs up!) I moved my right hand to hold her long neck and she decided to bite me but she did it so very gently Made me laugh right there and then, she's very sweet so I'll let you know how "the battle" between the parents and the step-mother (me) goes...sometime in May...first week, I'm thinking!

It sounds very painful, what do you mean "actually" harmful?? Planning on hatching a couple of goose eggs in my incubator but have kids!!

If they are hand raised is it right that they are moe tame??

I can't imagine a child being anything but frightened, not actually injured, by a goose bite. They can bruise if they get hold of a fleshy point. With all this said, I have 18 breeders in my yard right now. I have only been nipped once when I was pulling eggs out from under a hen. My dogs have been bit a few times and they won't go near the geese now. So, lesson was learned.

When my youngest of five was only 3-4 yrs old, we used to watch a friend's chickens and geese on weekends, or holidays. The geese loved knibbling on my daughter's flowery print "skirt" of her parka and we laughed about it, talking about how they liked her so much and she was never afraid tho the geese heads were as tall as she then.

Just the other day she opened a conversation about that time (she's now 19) about how the geese "were mean" and she was unafraid and I never thought she would have thought they were mean?!? They weren't, but I was always holding her hand, ready to step in if needed, and we always kept things on a positive note and tried respecting it was their barn, we were only there to ensure they had feed and water, collect the hen eggs (which were hidden around bales of straw).

They were white geese, don't know the breed name and never hissed nor showed aggression, just inquisitive of the flowery printed material. Wonder if that has a hidden meaning or help? Like waving a red flag for a bull...LOL

Oh, we've been weathered in, unable to leave yesterday so I decided I don't want to chance the geese getting upset while I'm gone if we can leave today and I put a five gallon pail of water in for the geese with a bucket of feed so they'll be safe and secure until I get back. Extra straw, too, and since it was snowing to beat the band yesterday I started shoveling and that made them get very verbal about what the strange noises were until I spoke so they knew it was only me and settled down again- heard the first robin this morning at 9am Spring amongst the snow...hoping to leave for vet care for my largest male weimaraner, he has dislocated his bottom jaw night before last. I'd better get busy, this site is too interesting! We've got an hour to get to the airport.

Join any goose group and they will tell you not to have geese around children. We have 7 enbdems three males and four females. i raised them from day olds. Two came from local farms (males) they are the meanest geese ever. the other 5 came from cackle. they are 9 months old and if i had it to do over I wouldnt get them. My grandchildren who took care of them when they were little can not go near them as they hiss and try to bite.they try to dominate little children and see them as lower on the ;ecking order. They see me the same way i dont go into the pens without a rake as they will bite. Ping our largest goose has drawn blood on my DH arm. I had them in a brooder inside the house until they were 2 months old,they were handles all the time but once they got outside in their pens it was a diffeerent story.I can pick them up if necessary but they prefer me not too. I had visions of a herd of geese out in the yard freeranging.LOL that was until Ping decided he would kill the other males. Now they are in three separate pens and he still trys to get to the other males throught he fence. it is a good thing they have a forever home here most people would not put up with them.
