what is the point of a feeder if all they do is spill it?

Hmmm wonder if I can find a fitting like what you have on the bottom of your pvc piping. I'm using a recycled leaf blower tube so it's pretty normal size. Then it can just fit in the container. Bet that would be the easiest and cheapest fix, if I can find a size to fit.

I'm scared to not have food there for them...even though what gets scratched out is all mixed in the pine shavings.

You need a deep narrow bin, have a mesh covering the top and then only fill it half way. That way they cannot get their feet in and dig it all out and they cannot scoop up the feed and out over the edge.
I've been using a goat black plastic trough from tsc. Never any feed tossed out.

How does everyone keep wild birds from eating all the feed? I have doves in my area and they will eat more than my chickens. Right now, I'm feeding inside a dog crate with a bird netting mess around everything, just waiting for the doves to figure it out.

I also have a PVC type feeder, but different system. It's waterproof, ant/varmit and wet chicken proof. Har har. The wild birds/squirrels have not learned how to steal from this one.

At the bottom there is a trigger that one of them can peck and it'll drop a few pellets. They only drop as much as they need and leave. I have no discernible waste, most people have a pan sitting under this type but I move the tractor daily and don't mind them tearing up the grass.

The only thing it is missing is windows which could be rectified by using a different type of pipe and some clear tape but the chickens let me know when they are out. Loudly. It holds between 15-20lbs of feed.
