What is the purpose of roosters crow?

Can anyone tell me why roosters do crow is it to alert other roosters that they are around

I believe there are multiple reasons that Roosters crow...

1) to let the girls know they are there,
2) to let other Roos know they are there,
3) because they like to!
4) because they know some of us love to hear them and
5) because they know some of us hate to hear them.
