What is the red speck?

I know this is a simple question but my wife asked me and I said I'll ask the experts. What is the red speck in a fresh laid egg?

It could be a blood spot, it should be harmless, though.

They are blood spots or meat spots. You can eat them or take them out if you want.

On occasion, a blood vessel will burst along the reproductive tract of a hen and you'll find a blood spot in an egg.
