What is this chicken thinking?

Are you sure, I interpreted the ovations much differently. Here's link to the announcement.

The way it is explained at the beginning of the thread is a little confusing. Some one interpreted it the same way you did, and if you look at post 5 Nifty-Chicken clarifies that we get 10 ovation posts. I searched the thread for only Nifty-Chicken's posts to see if they changed the system over time. But you will see in post 185 that it is 10 per day. I never really knew what the daily limit was before.

I believe I interpreted it the way you do when I first read it but then I got to thinking, isn't giving a thumbs up to someone who has made you happy by laughing or entertaining you included in, "posts that are beneficial to the forum and its membership as a whole?"

I had already received several ovations before I knew what they were and how they were made. I also thought it was a good way to keep the forums from being so cluttered by people saying, "Thank you" and "I really thought that was funny."

Also, if you read a little further down, it says what I just said and no one got chewed out for it. Re: 187 and 189.

I liked what I took it to mean in the first place but I also like being able to thank someone without feeling like I'm overdoing it by posting one last post to say Thank You. I don't mean to be annoying and if everyone thinks giving a thumbs up for receiving a bit of happiness is wrong in this sense, I won't do it again nor will I advise anyone to do it the way I have been doing it. I just need a monitor to clear it up for me.

Nobody but yourselves know how many ovations you receive...it is a personal thing that someone acknowledges if the post was "helpful"...that is whether somebody makes you laugh, cry or helps you in a constructive way if you have a problem with your flock(s)...

People will acknowledge in their own way...be it by a comment or an ovation...

Many people do not know nor understand the ovations button...it is wonderful when somebody comments on why they have given an ovation...that is very rewarding...as you will know!

Unless you have a higher level of membership there is a maximum of 10 thumbs up ovations per 24 hours...
