I need help - I am new to chickens and I don't know what this is. I added Sulmet to the water yesterday, but they don't seem to be responding and new ones seem to be getting it. My questions are:
1. What is it?
2. How do I treat it?
3. Can my kids get it?

THANKS I appreciate all help!

You can see how bad the swelling is in this pic:

HEEEEELLLLPPP!!!!

Are they getting any better? Any other symptoms? I would at least be putting Terramycin in the eye. Im not much help but I wanted to bump you back to the top.

This link to an old book:

http://ia700304.us.archive.org/10/items/mansonseyewormof00rommiala/mansonseyewormof00rommiala.pdf

has pictures that look similar to me. You probably will want to click the PDF format in the box on the upper left to see it --

VetRx will help wash it out. -- there instructions in the vet Rx box. Also there are a couple of You Tube videos showing people doing it. Turn the chicken upside down and drip the vet Rx into their upper beak.

Saline solution will help wash it out if you don't have vet Rx readily available. PM or email me if you want more info.

My chickens looked exactly like this on Wednesday. I took one to the vet. He didn't know what it was but gave me a broad spectrum antibiotic. It seems to be working very well. He now thinks it might be mycoplasma. I haven't really noticed any respiratory problems though. Mine are pets so I'm glad they're getting better. But if it is mycoplasma they will remain carriers their whole lives.

Mine are getting better on the Sulmet, too. Better, but not perfect. I was really scared there for a minute thinking it was coryza, but I really don't think it is. Mine don't have ANY respiratory symptoms, either - WEIRD. Keep me updated as to how your birds are doing or if you find a way to make it go away entirely - GOOD LUCK!

I have a few girls with swollen eyes, did yours get better and did you figure out what it was?
