Hello. Warning! Gross picture below. My 5 year old white leghorn hen has always been an inconsistent layer but a happy hen. Today I noticed a back ball hanging from her vent. After a quick epsom salt soak, the ball detached. A picture is below. What is this? The hen is still eating, roosting, and walking around. I am very concerned this is a bigger issue.

That looks similar to the blood in my bowl when I cull my chickens. It's like a stiff gelatin and slightly black in color due to oxidation.

In your case it looks like a blood ball.

Let us know if you see any more unusual things. Has she laid eggs recently or had any unusual eggs or lash eggs?
She has not laid a complete egg in at least a month. She has a history of laying weak shelled eggs and laid one of these just last week. I give oyster shells freely, but soft shelled eggs have always been an issue for this hen. No history of lash eggs or anything like this before. Will keep the forum updated. Thanks.
