What IS this?! Hole in hen's skin on her back...WARNING: GRAPHIC PICS!

just wanted to also say not to use the hydrogen peroxide--I work in a veterinary hospital and we never use it anymore in open wounds... the bubbling action does more damage than good. You can use a dilute solution of the betadine -which is what we do to flush a wound... You might simply ask your veterinarian if you could purchase some from them? If you have a good relationship with your hospital, they are usually pretty happy to help out...

Nolvasan ointment is good to have on hand as well--because it is water based.

I haven't read the other people post's but It it was obviously punctured. It could be a rooster ( time to cut some nails) or it could be a nail coming out of a wall of she could have hit herself on a corner. Whatever it is it is easy to fix. I would get some hydrogen peroxide and put it on her cut ONCE ( like 99 cents) This will kill any infection that looks like could be setting in. Maybe cut the feathers around it ( optional your decision) ... Most importantly keep her dry (whether that's separating her or putting on a hen saddle, and keep her from pecking it ( whether that's separating her, hanging cabbage, or putting on a hen saddle).

Member Lovemychix makes them (I have some on order).

If she starts to pick at her wound, you could hold the gauze on with some vetwrap around her body. Betadine you might/should be able to get in the RX section of your local grocery store.

From reading all your posts your going to make the OP spend a lot of unnecessary money. This is an easy treatment... Simply kill any possible infection and let the body do everything else....It shouldn't cost more that $1 for the peroxide (or anti- biotic ointment [once] )
If you really really really wanted to you could buy or make a cheap hen saddle, but that too is not needed.

We also have the ointment and peroxide, so there's no need to spend any money right now (the lice and Sevin Dust is another issue, however...I will deal with that later). We will use the peroxide and ointment once and put some gauze over it. Then once it heals we will deal with the lice later on. I found a website about how to make a chicken saddle and I think I will try that before spending money on ordering some,

Thanks again!

P.S. what is an OP? (lol sorry if this sounds like a "newbie" question...

i would not use the peroxide.bubble can get trapt under broket tissue and caus even worse infections, if that is what you have tho - put some on a piece of steril lint free cloth first and use that to gently clens the wound, you can also use an anibacterial soap in warm water first to gently cleat the area, then use the peroxide (on a cloth do not just pour it in the wound) ad the antibiotic ointment . i wou reapeat atleast 3 times a day. Keeping it clean with the antibacterial soap will be the most important part, also keep the suronding area clean. you should also treat the lice as they will probably bother the area.

wait to see if she picks at it first befor puting gauze on, it will heal faster if it is open to the air. you just have to keep it clean , but if she starts to bother it then you could cover it.
