So my sweet little Tractor Supply chicks from March started laying eggs about a month ago.
The first eggs I found was teeny tiny. My chicken friends said I had Bantam chickens. Since we are down to only 4 (2 ended up being roos), that bummed me out because I've read that Bantams might not lay as often, plus the eggs are tiny. And this was one tiny, yet adorable egg. 2 of my chickens are Faverolles, which I expected small pink eggs out of, but this was even smaller than I expected, and a brown egg so I thought it had to come from one of the Orpingtons.

So a couple days later while we are working in their coop I get to witness an actually lay! It was my goofy girl Fajita, one of the Faverolles. Well, she laid another tiny little brown egg. So I figure she might have been the responsible party for the first egg, and after all she is the smallest of the 4 girls.

Fast forward a few weeks and we are now rolling in the eggs. Most days I get at least 3, some days 4 eggs from the 4 girls. But the sizes are all over. Even my small eggs aren't as tiny as the first were, but some of my eggs are a nice standard size. I thought maybe that's the Orps...but it's weird because some days I get 3 small eggs and 1 big one....sometimes there are 2 big ones out there! What gives??

And then yesterday there was this beast! It looked like a goose egg. I wanted go out there and massage all their poor little bums, that had to hurt. lol.

What's up with inconsistent egg sizes?

Initial weeks of production are the systems figuring out how to make eggs and this comes with all sorts of variety from one day to the next. Tiny pullet eggs, giant double yolk eggs, etc. Eventually things regulate

Really? That makes me happy to hear. My first question when I got the little egg was could it be a part of the beginning of laying...would it eventually turn to bigger eggs? And my friends said no, egg sizes don't change those are just Bantam eggs. So, well.

A double/triple yolker

Yep, when hens first start laying, the egg size is definitely smaller than average. It is also normal to get a few 'glitched' eggs in the beginning. Some of the most common defects in new layers are yolk-less eggs and double/triple-yolked eggs. However, if you are getting a lot of defective eggs, it could be caused by a sudden change in the environment (lighting and/or temperature are some of the main causes for egg abnormalities).

Egg size definitely increases with maturity. My sex-links started out medium sized... then, after about 2 yrs of age, their egg size was x large/xx large. By their 3ed year, their eggs where barely small enough to fit in Jumbo egg cartons... lol. :D I have a hard time finding cartons for them. :p

Yes, Some breeds naturally have bigger eggs than others but egg size is not always identical... even in the same chicken. :)

I got a marble sized egg from a red star who just started laying. It had no yolk, just a weird black dot in the white. On the other end, there's a one year old Brahma hen I care for who always lays these gigantic goose eggs. Never a double yolk though. Can you tell us what you find in yours? I love the weird eggs lol.
