So this is a older video, the bird that was making the noise has sadly passed but I have been wondering for a while what this noise meant. She would always stop whenever I went closer to the run. In her 10 months she only made this noise 3 or 4 times. And she is the chicken that is walking around in the run, the others were in the coop.

Sounds to me like a hen trying to crow like a rooster. Did you have a rooster? I have an older bantam hen who likes to try to crow every summer. Sound more like screaming, but she gets an A for effort.

Nope, just a hen being a noisy hen. I have 200 birds and a couple scream like that after they lay eggs, it’s their way of ‘bragging’😂

I don't know what that sound means. To me it does not sound like a hen trying to crow nor does that sound like the egg song. I don't consider that an alarm call either. I've heard that before but not that loud. It's almost as if she is bored. I would not worry about it.

There are different explanations for the egg song after they lay an egg. The one I like is that when they are laying an egg the flock has moved. So when the hen comes off of the nest she calls to say "where are you, I'm ready to rejoin the flock". Most of my roosters don't do this but I have had a few that would go to her, mate with her, and then take her back to the flock. Why mate with her? Since she is laying eggs obviously they need to be fertile. It is natrue's way of helping the eggs that are being laid to be fertile.

She's complaining loudly. I have hens/pullets that'll do this. Even roosters will do it, but not as often, but more so if they get placed in an unfamiliar place.

I think it may have been because at the time she was losing eyesight in her left eye due to a injury so what you said makes sense. Photo of her eye at around that time for reference

Yeah, it was due to a injury from one of the others probably pecking at her eye. The eye started to bulge out of her head and discolor more and more in the following 4 months. She was euthanized as her eye started to hurt her and she was acting very wrong and her quality of life wasn’t good. (whenever i moved she would back up, squishing her head to her neck and shake her head at the same time. She would also rub her chest feathers on the ground as she walked).

this is a photo of her a few days before she was euthanized. (She looks scraggly as she was molting then)
