What is this on my cow?

Heh...neither are my cows. Hold a little grain by the camera - usually works for me!

There's not a whole lot you can do about them....and it's not a life or death thing. Most of the time they only show up on the neck and shoulder area. Once in awhile they'll show up as a venereal warts and that can cause problems in breeding stock. They're caused by a virus and usually only affect younger cattle. They usually fall off after a few months. Sometimes when they itch they'll rub on them and cause them to bleed....just watch so he doesn't get a secondary infection.

I saw this on a young mini horse once. My brother had just got the mini, it was not that well cared for though. After he wormed, vaccinated, and fed it well they went away quickly. This baby calf looks well tended

I am going to agree with tornado. We have had experience with ringworm and warts. Warts tend to be "bumps" that stick out and ringworm looks just like what is on this calf. The way we treated it was to use a wirebrush just hard enough to break through the crusty layer and to make it appear raw. Then use iodine on each individual place. You can use a cloth, cotton, gauze or whatever to put the iodine on. Another thing that we found to work really, was a type of spray that is used on apple trees. Unfortunately, I forget the name of it but my DH may remember it. It is not life threatening to the calf and will eventually clear up. It is more in the looks of the calf. Hope this is helpful info.

I have no idea what it might be, but just a note...
Be careful not to get any iodine in anythings' eyes, or they could go blind.
I'm sure you could have figured that out on your own (that stuff stings on an open cut!), but it's good to be reminded sometimes.

I hope it goes away quickly!
