First time hatching. Noticed this after chick #3 hatched. Thank you.

I always hatch under broody hens, so I don't see the intimate details of the hatchings, but to me this just looks like some left over yolk sack that detached from a chick. There isn't any blood, so I wouldn't be concerned about it.

We started with 13. We put 9 in our incubation and 4 out under our hen. Two were nothing when we candled on day 10 (1 from the incubator and 1 from the hen). 7 have hatched inside and still waiting on one that I'm worried about :/ it pipped but hasn't zipped and membrane is starting to look dry. The hen has two under her hatched and one I don't think is going to make it (my son dropped it yesterday when he grabbed the egg by mistake), but I put it back under her in hopes because the membrane was still intact. He felt pretty bad, but lesson learned.

So hopefully we will end up with 10! We did the assorted laying mix from Meyer's hatchery so it will be fun to see what breeds we have :)

Next up I am going to try some guinea eggs! They are set to come Thursday.

We are going to sneak out a couple chicks tonight and put them under the broody silkie with the chicks that just hatched. Our other silkie is broody also but she in on 6 duck eggs. Going to need more silkies in the future I think!

Oh, what a difficult lesson for your son! I remember those kinds of lessons so well, and it makes me feel so badly for well meaning little guys. Bless his heart.
