I wish they WERE potatoes! She stills looks fine, not a feather out of place, eating and drinking good.

I've just never seen this before, she was laying fine one day, and then the strange the next. If she starts to look like she's suffering at all, I'll cull her. I don't want her to be in pain, but right now, she looks content. They go out on nice days, but yesturday it rained, so hopefully I can get her some outside time today.

Wow... it's almost as if she's laying hardboiled eggs.

I truly have not heard of that before. You might want to edit the title on your first post to include "internal layer?" to catch the attention of others that might have more experience with it. My hen only had the one HUGE mass, and never passed so much as a fart.

Just a quick update, she only laid one of the strange eggs yesturday, and bright and early this morning when I went out, she had already laid a big brown egg, just like usual!

So I'm just going to keep an eye one her, and wait and see. I'm hoping that whatever the problem was, she's corrected it.

I sure hope it's all done too. I don't think caging a hen causes internal laying, otherwise commercial poultries would go broke. If you need to cage your hens, by all means cage them. Only you know what is the best situation for your birds given your local weather, housing options and bird hardiness. I have heard that internal laying can be genetic, so if she ends up tipping over from it, I would not hatch out babies from her to replace her, no matter how big and dark her eggs are. Good luck, and do please keep us posted. I find threads like this, with pics, very valuable learning material. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you onthespot!

I don't plan on hatching any of her eggs, they are too yummy!

lol

I will keep everyone posted on any changes on Gretta, but so far so good, still no more wierd eggs today.

Has anyone had an internal layer that self corrected itself and ended up alright? (If that is the situation)

I've had 3 or 4 out of my original 26. Most would have an episode of weird laying/no laying, bloating. I'd treat, they'd recover.

I'd treat with, well, I've tried just about everything from antibiotics to homeopathic medicine, most who recovered would relapse again eventually. I've lost them all now but many had months or even years of good health between episodes. Although a few never recovered even with treatment.

I know it's not exactly what you want to hear. I really don't want to say it.

At this point if any other hens come down with the same symptoms I just do supportive therepy, good food and TLC if she recovers she recovers if not... she sure had a great life.

I do have a couple hens that I have a fund set up for, these are my really special pets, they will be taken to the vet for a spay surgery if it happens to them and live out their lives as pets. I would love to do the same for all of my hens but the expense is just too much.
