I think for awhile the winner posted because of the confusion... But I thought I would encourage them to post

Ok so obviously a pot but no one I have spoken to knows how it would be used. Even empty it weighs 10 pounds. Long hollow handle. Very tippy to hold by handle. Can't imagine trying to lift this with something hot inside.

The soot staining on it and long handle make me think it's some kind of hearthware for cooking over an indoor hearth. It would have a long handle on it like that to keep the user from having to get too close to the fire to take it out.

100% a guess though. I can't say for sure.
 
That's a good suggestion for the pot. The ashes are actually because I use it to carry ashes from my wood stove. I'm surprised it doesn't have a second kind of handle on the other side because even empty it is difficult to carry using just the handle as the weight tips it forward.
