We got this hen from a lady who was getting rid of her hens and we found out she was going to kill all the old ones so we took her and a see others along with us. Just noticed this the other day on her leg.. we have been bathing her in warm water with epsom salt and using a foot rot spray but nothing seems to work. Doesn’t look like bumble foot. Anyone have any ideas?

That looks like a very bad case of leg mites, sometimes called tassel foot, when it affects birds, and this is a bad case that has caused the growths and may affect the circulation. Ivermectin would be a good choice to use on the back of the neck down the spine. Dosage is 0.1 ml per every 2 pounds of weight given once and repeat in 14 days. Toss eggs for a month total. I would also soak the feet and legs in warm Epsom salts or saopy water, and use a soft toothbrush to loosen the scales. Apply vaseline or a thick ointment and rub into legs after. Repeat a couplemof days a week.

Thank you! We will try this and hopefully will help! But we are worried about brushing it with a toothbrush because it will bleed.. is that normal? She pecks at it herself and makes it bleed

At least do the soaks, and I would do them daily for the first week. She picks at it because of the mites. The crusts need to come off. Sometimes they can lose toes to the mites.

Excellent thanks very much! We will start doing this today. She’s such a sweet hen, don’t want her to lose any toes!

Is the other foot/leg just as bad?

I agree it could be SLM and you have been given good advice.

I would work on getting that large crusty lump off. Does she have a lot of debris/poop in her feathers too? I would work on that as well.

Hope she gets better.
