What is this?!?

If you are going to use goldfish, please remember they are an invasive species that can easily survive the winters as long as the pond doesn't freeze to the bottom. Goldfish ponds that don't have inlets or outlets to other bodies of water aren't much risk.

Side note: my aunt had a goldfish pond. It attracted a LOT of cranes and other birds that eat fish. She ended up adding quite a lot of plants and things for the fish to hide under. Much like the other waterways around here. She also had a bigger fish pond that connected to the waterways. That one had perch, bass, and panfish.

Totally true, all of it. And two friends who had koi in their backyard ponds lost them to herons, very expensive losses, and learned that goldfish and heavy plantings are best! And don't forget about weasels, any variety, are happy to help with fish in small ponds too.
