Hi sheps4her

Game birds were originally bred for cock fighting but many of the game breeds are now only for exibition, kind of like English Bulldogs.

stupid, stupid me!

I don't know what I was thinking. Of course "Game bird".
We recently had a cock fighting ring busted up hear and they rounded up all the birds. Maybe they missed one! Are the roosters all I would have to worry about?? I want to get a few more hens...will she tolerate them??

Just color me Duh!

i'd like to encourage you to hang on to her and see if you can't put together a little flock of happy hens. there are many more people on this board who have tons more experience with game birds but i suspect it depends more on the "bird" than the breed. after all you can have a flock of very "docile" breed birds who will go after and kill one of their own.
i've rescued and rehomed several "game" birds and i kept one handicapped game rooster as my very own and he is exceptionally tame and docile!
you need to exercise good judgement and common sense but i don't think you should be too worried!
let's see who else comes along to comment.

PS - hey sheps, where are you located? you aren't in s. cali are you? there is a small flock of little game mix hens in one of the shelters here that look very much like this little hen in terms of color and shape! they would make a very beautiful little group . . .

I will see what happens when I get the others. I will pen them together with a divider at first and introdue them slowly. The more I think of it the more I KNOW she came from that flock of fighting birds. Worse comes to worse I will keep her seperate from the others.

Sheps-are you going to call your local humane society to see if they have any of the other hens from the ring they busted up?? They may have only put down the males.

all of them were place. I adopted this hen from them. I found it wandering around, turned it in, then adopted when not claimed. I will get more from them if any others are turned in. Maybe.

I had a game hen once and she did very well with my other chickens. She was very smart. She didn't lay much though, only when she wanted to set. I never let her hatch any chicks.
