What is up with Craigslist?

For some areas, childcare and some others you have to have an account. If an area is routienely flagged with multiple complaints, they'll start making all posters have accounts, to deal with fraud alerts.

I had to do it. It sends a code to you phone, via text or phone call. I think it's to avoid using other peoples email, spam and stuff. People misusing it I'm sure is the cause. It's annoying though.

I had to give my phone number also. I have call block so i dont care. I dont think they call anyone. They use that to thin out the criminals.

I also had to give a phone number when setting up an account. They use it to send an automated call with a PIN, which you use in creating the account. The phone number doesn't appear in any ads.

I've made accounts before where I had to give a phone number, then got an immediate call with a PIN that I had to punch in to complete the registration process.

I never got any wierd calls from it. Never had my phone number sold to telemarketers, or anything like that.

I agree that it's a pain in the tush, but it's probably pretty safe to do it.

They can have my email address. I don't really want to give them my phone number!

You can get a free phone number from google voice.

Some areas of the country have had their farm section targeted by activist groups. They flag every ad with an animal, animal feed, or animal related equipment. I am guessing that your city has had problems in the past so that is why registration is now required.

Totally off topic on the whole phone number for the account thing...but DH is completely in the dark ages as far as computers go and he and a buddy decided to get on CL at work the other day... they were going to find a date for another guy at work as a joke...they didnt know what the "adult" section meant... they both came to me frantically asking if that is illegal cause they were pretty sure its illegal and they were going to jail for stumbling into it... I just told them if they are so worried maybe they shouldnt click on things that say "adult" anymore!
