Hey yall tonight I found some blood in the coop and so I started a search for what was wrong. Long story short there’s been a hawk coming every day and so they are locked in the coop. Well one of the hens ripped her toenail off on a crate (I blocked off the pinching area now don’t worry) and she is all taken care of and doing fine, but while I was searching for the bleeding victim, I found that one of my hens a RIR, had a red blotch pretty much like on her crop, and this odd yellow stuff around her feathers kinda a bit below her tail and vent. It was very hard to see/get a picture, so sorry for the bad quality photos. I’ve heard of vent gleet but I think this is different? Is this due to lice or something? I looked at her skin around the area and just saw a bit more but no bugs or anything as far as I could tell. Any insight appreciated, thanks.

Oh I thought I’d add, she has had issues with poop stuck on her feathers before but it’s been cleared up mostly lately, and the vent itself is clean and looks normal.

Could the yellow be dried egg yolk? Maybe she sat where an egg had been broken.
It's only on that side right?

The redness on her breast, is that located over her crop? How does she roost, could it be located where her chest/breast rests on the roosting bar? Looks like it just worn of feathers. You can apply a very light coat of NuStock cream to the red skin to see if that helps.

You know, I did find a broken egg the other day. That would make much more sense as to what the yellow crust is. And as far as she roosts, the roosting bar isn’t thick enough for her to have her crop sitting on it. Yes the odd color is right over her crop. She will sometimes sleep on the floor for some reason so maybe that’s it? Probably like a month ago the coop door somehow blew shut during the day and she got caught outside in a rainstorm. There’s some coverage out there she just clearly didn’t use it. I have since tied the coop door open (when they went out before hawks) but she was shivering and still damp when I drove out to check on her about 11pm. I nestled her in my lap in the car and brought her back to the garage where I have a little crate for things like this and a heat lamp. I put on the heat lamp for a half an hour before I went to bed, gave her some soaked chick food and put a towel over the crate before turning the lamp off. In the morning she seemed to be much better, but she almost acts a little more lethargic sometimes but it’s almost not noticeable unless you know this hen. She’s usually pretty spunky. Not sure what’s up lately.
