What is wrong with my girl!?

Oh no, I am very sorry for your loss. It might be good to get a necropsy on her body by the state vet lab, if you can keep her body cold in a cooler wrapped in plastic bags. Here is a list of state vets to call first thing in the morning if you wish:

I put her in our deep freezer - which I would assume would not be a cooler 🥴 and plan to bury her tomorrow with our other 2 silkies we lost during the heat wave.

Freezing the body may affect the necropsy, but if you take it out and keep it cold, that may be okay. Don’t worry if you prefer to bury her. But it can be good to get some answers about a death in case it could affect other flock members.

I have another chicken exhibiting symptoms of wry neck or something similar. Do you think the 2 could be related?

I’m sorry you lost your hen and that another is unwell. I’ve had this exact issue running through my flock recently and it turned out to be Marek’s. I hope this is not the case for you, but if you lose another you might consider getting the necropsy done so you can know one way or the other.

Hoping the best for you and your flock! There’s of course many other things that could be causing these symptoms and I know you’ll get great advice here!

Can you give her some vitamin E 400 IU daily, along with 1/4 tablet of B complex daily. Some scrambled egg bits for selenium could be helpful. Wry neck is a neurological symptom, and can be due to a head or neck injury, vitamin deficiency, and from a virus that can affect the brain, such as Mareks and a few others. If you lose her one day, I would send her body to your state vet for a necropsy.

How do I administer all of this? I can go get some tomorrow. Tablets, capsules or liquid? Syringe feeding food/meds scare me as I’m still a new chicken tender. If I lose her I will definitely take her for a necropsy.

The b complex can be crushed into a spoonful of water or into some egg. The E can be popped up into her beak to swallow. Walmart has good prices on vitamins. Here is a video on how to give a pill or medication:

Thank you so much. I will go tomorrow to get them.
