I walked into the coop this morning, to find that my two-year old brown leghorn hen seemed ill. She is unable to poop. When she tries to, she will make a wheezing sound and a string of clear foam will come out. This has been nonstop all day. She will walk a few feet and then strain again. Her abdomen seems distended and her comb and waddles are pale. Her vent is very dirty, too. She was laying up until this morning (so it can’t be EYP). Wondering if she could have an internal parasite.

Do you have any human calcium citrate or Tums? Give one orally, and you may need to cut the Tums in half. She might be egg bound. Have you seen any odd or soft eggs lately? I would give her a little water with sugar held up to beak or given with a syringe/dropper. Get her vent area cleaned up with a little soap and water. If she seems strong enough, you could soak her in warm water. If not, just clean her vent off. Does her belly seem like it is full of fluid? Hens her age can suffer from a number of things such as ascites/water belly, cancer, and salpingitis.

She finally passed a dropping, but it looks unusual. I soaked her in epson salt and cleaned her vent. I gave her some sugar water with a syringe, she will not eat anything else.
