I am looking to add to my flock and I am looking for ideas about what I want to get. I am open to almost any breed/varieties, and I want to know what YOUR favorite breed/variety is and WHY. Please be sure to add why, it would be most helpful to me. Also, if you have more than one favorite, feel free to add them all. Please respect everyone's opinion on this thread. No nastiness.

I personally love Silkies, Showgirls, D'uccle and Seramas. Of course i love any chicken but ill always have to have those breeds.
Silkies/Showgirls: Very calm and gentle, they look like adorable fluff balls and they are soft.
D'uccle: I love the way they look(feathered feet, beard, mille fleur color), they seem gentle and tame if you work with them all the time. Mine hardly get held but would be very tame after being held a few times.
Seramas: Very small in size and also very calm and gentle. I also love the way they stand upright and how they look in pose.
Thats my opinions

My White AMeraucanas have the best personalites and disposition of all of my birds. They roo is just the sweetest ever. Easy to hold and interact with, incredibly gental and really consistant layers. I also love my bantam polish, but mostly because they look ridiculous and are completly neurotic and amusingly stupid.

I love all my chickens, but one of my favorites is my Bantam Mille Fleur D'Uccle. She is super tiny, far smaller than my other bantams. She is beautiful, golden with black and white speckles. And what I love most about her is her intelligence. She was always the quickest to learn, ever since she was a baby. She was the first to perch in the brooder, the first to eat and drink, and the first to realize that I was above her (looking down on her from above the brooder). She turned her head sideways and looked up at me while the other chicks just peeped. She is still the smartest, she knows her name, does tricks for watermelon and is a favorite among visitors who always point her out and call her "beautiful and SO tiny!". She's very sweet too. I can perch her on my arm and walk around the yard... she's a real smart and cute little thing.

This is a hard thing to decide on but I guess if you put my feet to the flame, I'd go with the Delawares. They are beautiful, talk your ear off and very personable. They also lay huge brown eggs and lay almost every day. They are also good meat birds if that is your fancy...

For historical reasons, I love the Dorkings. I saw them for the first time in Jamestown, VA and knew from that point on I HAD to have them!

For the shear curiosity of it, I have La Fleche. Not particularly pretty and not at all friendly although not at all mean, they are interesting in that they have horns and even though they are little in structure they lay rather large eggs. They are also known to be the best flavored of all the breeds... I don't know this personally as I haven't eaten any yet.

My all time FAVORITE bantam and runs a very close second to the Delaware, is the Cochin. Not at all rare or endangered but these are the cutest and funniest chickens around. I also believe them to be one of the friendliest birds around. Mine think they own me and want to use me as a personal jungle gym. I do not believe there is anything sweeter than a bantam Cochin hen escorting her chicks around the yard. I hope the last thing I think of when I pass from this world is that particular site.

Breeds that I've had that I like are Buff Orpingtons because they are also very friendly and will hatch their own chicks. They don't lay as well as the Delawares but they do have the cute puffy butts like the Cochins. Some of the prettiest chickens I've ever set my eyes on is the Black and Blue Orpingtons. I've never owned them but gosh, they are gorgeous. The Buffs however is one of the best chickens if you are a new chicken owner. They are VERY forgiving.

Hope this helps...
