What is your favorite heavy, good egg laying, cold tolerant breed?

I love our Orpington hens. Both roosters of that breed I have had are rather mean though:( I have a BB Game Bantam Rooster and a Milli Fleur Rooster that are super duper sweet so comparing my roosters I don't like my Buff Orp. rooster at all. I am looking for a new nicer Orp. rooster if that is possible to find. I have 1 Barred Rock pullet and she is super sweet but she is not old enough to lay yet though I have heard they are good layers even in winter.

Our favorite are the Jersey Giants and Light and Buff Sussex. We are thinking about crossing Blue Jersey Giants with the Sussex.

We use sand in our coops and don't have any problems with dirty feet, flies, wetness, etc... If I could get EVERYBODY to use sand, the world would be a better place LOL!!!!

I also use sand in my coops mixes well with DE & PDZ much cleaner & I have lots of feathered feet so,
