We have a spectacular Lavender Orpington roo. He is very good with us but is protective of his ladies in a gentle way. If someone starts heading toward something he thinks is dangerous he just uses his body to herd her back where he wants her. He always waits for them to eat the best food first. In fact, we almost can't get him to eat something until the ladies are done! He is huge (We need to weigh him.), but is very careful when he mounts the girls. Perversely, his favorite girl is a little silkie. She's pretty keen on him, too! He is tolerant beyond belief with our ditzy Polish hen. He shows her the nest boxes and tries to help her figure out where to lay her eggs. We have three pullets in with them now and he is very fatherly with them, for now. Wait till their combs turn red, though! It was rather accidental that we ended up with him but we sure are glad we did!
