Our white leghorns are at least 10 weeks old now and we had to give away the one cockerel when they were all 7 weeks old. So far, I assume one of the ladies took up the leader role, Fiona. Now she has the largest comb and has a bit of wattle. She hasn't made a attempt at crowing, and her tail feathers look just like the others. Plus, her comb isn't nearly as pink as Jasper's was. What is your take on her?

Here was our cockerel at 7 weeks.

at 10 weeks the comb shouldn't be that big

the comb usually starts to grow in a pullet after 15 weeks

so could go either way there

hard to say

I think it's a pullet. A cockerel's would be much bigger. I have a ten week old trio right now and the male's is much bigger than hers. She's the dominant pullet and she may have more male hormone in her.

I think she is the dominant pullet. I think I've seen her chase of doves and cardinals! I actually just read that females can "man up" when there's no rooster, which we just gave our cockerel away at least 3 weeks ago! I read that if she is getting tougher, she'll cease laying, half crow, and may develop spurs!

I wonder if there's a way to prevent it??
