What killed my kids?

There was shelter but not covered on every direction, and in Dallas we usually have rain with high wind.

But even the rain was very moderate that night, I believe next time I would wait 3 months before putting them out.

I still feel terrible about them :( I really miss them. It was a absolute pleasure watching them grow
.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know you must be devastated. We learn from experiences.

I wouldn't have thought rain could have killed them at that age with such warm temperatures either, but I bet that is what happened too. Try again.

At any age, they need an enclosed shelter that is totally out of the weather. Even if they stay out and play in the rain, they need a place that is weatherproof where they can go in and dry off.

Thanks for all the replies,

Raising chickens is truly a hands-on experience. Once I almost overheated some chicks inadvertently and found them panting! They were certainly near death because they can overheat easily and die. I knew that was a problem to avoid, but still it happened because of the changing weather and I wasn't focused on it enough.

No matter how much you read, chick-rearing is all about learning!

Go get some more chicks and try again!

Yes I am already making one myself those are pretty nice ones.

I have bunch 3-4 weeks in my garage will take more precautions this time.

Rightnow couldn't forget those kids :(

Could it have hailed? I know there has been strange things like the Ark town that found dead birds everywhere. They blamed it on hail in atmosphere. Maybe sometime hit them on the head? Small hail can be really hard to small heads.
I want to know too, although my pen is covered all over with tarps or netting on top. They can still get wet. I believe, if it was rain, it had to be acid rain.
